GRIDON embraces architecture to enhance your home

Architecture is sometimes wrongly viewed as an undefined and unnecessarily expensive venture. At the same time, we enjoy going abroad to see beautiful buildings, whether they are 2000 years old, like the Colosseum in Rome, or hyper-modern, like the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam. When you make any structural changes in extending your house, architecture immediately becomes relevant.

What’s the best way to approach that aspect? The aesthetic principles presented by philosophical journalist Alain de Botton are very accessible and very insightful. We definitely recommend watching all three videos in his “Perfect Home” series, based on his book “The Architecture of Happiness”.

In essence, what Alain de Botton has to teach us about architecture can be summarised as follows:

  • 1. People as temporary residents

    Every home will stand the test of time, outliving a single person’s life span, so people are always temporary residents. The person living there is a temporary caretaker, or co-designer. All requests for adjustments or structural changes must be considered in this light. What would future guests/employees think of my envisioned construction or adaptation 50 years from now?

  • 2. Every zeitgeist has its own style

    We no longer build medieval castles or mud huts, and for good reason. Building pastiche 1930s homes in retro style is simply not done, says Alain de Botton – and we agree. But if you love that classic 1930s style, then buy an authentic house built in that era, and we’ll help you renovate it with all the modern conveniences. We have a responsibility to preserve the legacy of historical beauty for the generations to come, and that includes architecture.

    The homes we live in reflect our lives. The places where we live our lives express our personality (whether we’re spending time in a hotel, an office, a residential home or any other building). If the indoor and outdoor spaces and the rhythms of living are effectively structured, designed and coordinated, this will lead to a happier life for the residents/users.
